Huis van Roosmalen
by bOb Van Reeth and Will van Roosmalen
Architectural icon | 1985 -2017
In 1985, the assignment of visionary architect bOb Van Reeth by artist Will van Roosmalen gave rise to the now iconic “Huis van Roosmalen” along the Scheldt riverbank. Van Roosmalen's request to envelop his future residence and atelier entirely in black and white transformed the former grey corner house into a maritime-inspired architectural marvel. The new building generously embraced its prominent location, standing as a beacon connecting the river Scheldt and the city of Antwerp.
Since its completion in 1988 the building has been hailed for its striking design, emerging as an icon and catalyst for revitalizing the deprived Scheldt riverbank and accelerating urban development. It marked a significant disruption in Antwerp's architectural landscape and was soon, for obvious reasons, popularly named “Zebrahuis”. The recognition of its unique post-modern design and impact on urban development later led to the official acknowledgment as architectural heritage.
Following Will van Roosmalen's passing in 2017 and a tumultuous history of deterioration and structural challenges, Zebrahuis changed ownership in 2020. This transition paved the way for a much-needed sustainable renovation and repurposing of this distinctive property.
A new role | 2024
The reimagination and renovation of Zebrahuis is equally ambitious as its history, respecting the vision of Will van Roosmalen and bOb Van Reeth by honouring their unique design language and vision of each floor as an open plan where the essential elements determine and support the organization of new functions, residents and uses over time.
Zebrahuis generously embraces its new role as a dynamic venue for meetings, exhibitions and living, resonating with the profound revitalization of the riverbank as a vibrant public and green front for the city. The reimagination of the top three levels is an invitation to discover an architectural icon and to experience its relevance for Antwerp as a visual landmark with breath-taking panoramic views over the riverbank.
Let’s meet.
